Can fragrances make us smarter Research suggests they can. One study investigated the impact of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) essential oils on performance and mood in 144 healthy volunteers. Researchers found that individuals exhibited a better quality of memory after exposure to the aroma of rosemary. Although lavender appeared to impair memory, it did provide a sedative effect. The subjects who had been exposed to the aromas of rosemary and lavender reported greater contentment than the control group. Researcher Dr. Mark Moss states: “ What is interesting is the possibility of using rosemary over a long period of time to maintain cognitive performance. In could be that a bit more rosemary with lunch maintains a healthy mind throughout life.”
