Our Diamond microdermabrasion systems operate without crystals. The exfoliation process occurs when a diamond tipped head makes contact with the skin. At Serenity Zone Med Spa, we prefer to avoid the crystal microderm systems as some of the crystals may remain in the skin over time. Plastic surgeons claim they can recognize a crystal microderm “junkie” at the time of plastic surgery by the amount of crystals that are still in the skin.

In both crystal and diamond microdermabrasion systems the dead skin cells are gently removed away from the face.

Who can benefit from Microdermabrasion?

Everyone! Men and women of any skin type or color. Skin that is aging, congested, flaky, dry, devitalized, thickened, blemished, dull and sun damaged can be rejuvenated and refreshed. Blotchiness, uneven skin tones and texture will also be improved. Even healthy skin can be made to look fresher with a warm glow.

What areas can be treated?

The most common areas that are treated are the face and neck. In addition we can treat the chest, shoulders, back, hands, knees and elbows. Any body area can be treated.

Why does the skin benefit from Microdermabrasion?

Approximately every month we generate a new layer of skin. As new cells grow they push their way to the surface and then dead cells remain on the surface. This can cause enlarged pores, clogged pores, a bumpy uneven texture, and a dull appearance. As we age this process slows down leading to the appearance of older skin with less radiance.

How does it work?

Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliation that is performed with a diamond-encrusted applicator tip.  The tip passes over the skins surface, and creates a gentle vacuum.  Once removed, it reveals one’s own fresher, younger looking skin beneath. One Microdermabrasion is equal to three 30% glycolic peels or one 70% peel.

Is Microdermabrasion the same as Dermabrasion?

No, Microdermabrasion is NOT the same as Dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is a much more aggressive procedure which has to be done in an operating room, whereas Microdermabrasion is much gentler and can be performed in our medical spa.

How many treatments do you need for the best results?

This treatment is meant to be progressive not aggressive. Generally results are more noticeable after the third treatment as the benefits are cummulative. After the first session the skin will appear fresher, cleaner, smoother and softer for some clients. Treatments are typically performed once each month, but can be done more frequently. A typical course of treatment is a series of six Microdermabrasion sessions. Maintenance treatments are suggested once every 4 to 6 weeks.

How long does it take?

The actual treatment usually takes 30-40 minutes, depending on the body area. Plan to spend a minimum of one hour at Serenity Zone Med Spa as we add additional time for some pampering.

What are the side effects?

• One may experience a slight tingling, and afterward the skin may feel tighter, as if exposed to the wind or sun.
• The skin may appear slightly flushed and this generally fades in 12-24 hours.

Cautions:

• If you suffer with cold sores, you should be cold sore free prior to a treatment to avoid the risk of them spreading.
• You need to discuss with the technician if you have any of these conditions: rosacea, dermatitis, skin cancers, easy bruising, Hepatitis C, AIDS, or are on blood thinners or Accutane.
• If you use Retin A products or any skin care products that irritate the skin you should stop them for at least 2-3 days before and do not restart until 2-3 days after a treatment.

• For One week before and after your treatment please STOP using the following treatments and products:�
  • Electrolysis, waxing, depilatories, masks, other Glycolic or Lactic Treatments or Dermabrasion.
  • Hair dyes, permanent wave or straightening treatments.
  • Tretinoin (Vitamin A Acid creams) and Glycolic Acids.
  • At home exfoliation products
• Be sure to inform your technican of:
  • Allergies.
  • History of sensitive skin, eczema, lupus or other autoimmune disease.
  • Current medications.
  • History of sun sensitivity.
• If you are planning to have Botox, laser hair removal, it is recommended to have those 24 hours apart from a Microdermabrasion.

What is the greatest advantage of microdermabrasion?

• Probably the single biggest advantage that microdermabrasion has over alternative skin treatments is that a microdermabrasion patient can return to normal daily activities after receiving the treatment.
• Many other skin treatments used for the same skin conditions involve post-treatment swelling and require days off work.
• This makes microdermabrasion an ideal treatment for people wanting improved skin without disrupting their daily life over it.

What happens during a Microdermabrasion treatment?

• At your first visit a Microdermabrasion technician will provide a free consultation. During the consultation she will discuss the benefits of Microdermabrasion, explain the procedure and benefits to you and answer any questions that you may have. She will also explain how the procedure works and how many sessions you will need to create the results you are looking for, and provide you with our package pricing. She will also ask you a series of questions to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure and to determine your skin type and sensitivity.
• The technician will cleanse your face making sure that all make-up is properly removed prior to your treatment. It is not necessary to remove mascara, lip stick or lip liner.
• You will lie down on your back on a treatment bed.
• Prior to your microdermabrasion, the technician may offer you an optional chemical peel or mask to increase the benefits of your treatment.
• The technician will place a fresh, sterilized diamond tip onto the handpiece of the microdermabrasion machine. The machine is then turned on and its setting will be adjusted for your skin type.
• The technician moves the small sterilized hand piece over your skin in short sweeping motions. This is done in up to 4 directions on each part of the face. Extra treatment may be done to stubborn areas.
• You may feel a gentle suction on your skin and a slight gritty feeling as the diamond tip removes a thin layer of dead skin cells.
• There is no bleeding, pain, needles or cutting with this procedure.
• After the microdermabrasion is completed, the technician uses a soft, damp cloth to remove any residual skin cells.
• A soothing or calming mask is then applied onto the skin to help calm any redness to to hydrate the skin.
• Finally, sunscreen is applied, and the treatment is complete.
• Your therapist will discuss after-care instructions and the technician will recommend specific products to take care of your skin after the treatment.

Other Important Points for the first 3 days:

• You may apply makeup 3 to 4 hours after your treatment.
• Avoid abrasive sponges for 1 week after your treatment.
• Avoid sun exposure.
• DO NOT pick, peel, scrape, scratch or wax your skin.
• If your skin is dry use moisturizer as many times a day as you like.
• If you develop a cold sore, call the Serenity Zone Medical Spa team to let us know this immediately as it could spread into the area of the glycolic acid peel.
• It is very important NOT to EXERCISE for 24 hours after a treatment. Perspiration will produce a stinging sensation on newly treated skin which can take several hours to dissipate.

What other techniques can be used to make Microdermabrasion even more effective?

Microdermabrasion can be combined with a new treatment called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) – also known as Fotofacials. IPL treats broken blood vessels, red skin tones, brown freckling and spots, wrinkles, shrinks pores, improves sun damage and increases collagen in the skin. The 7 Biggest Mistakes People Make When Choosing A Spa & How To Avoid Them”
 

Mistake #1: You pick a spa based only on price.

The old adage is true. “You get what you pay for.” This is especially true when choosing a spa. If you want the best services you should decide to deal with a spa because of the overall value you receive, NOT because they are the lowest price.

Here’s why

Value = Quality + Service + Price

It is impossible for any business in any industry to offer the cheapest price, have the highest quality, and provide the best service all at the same time.

You can get high quality and super service, but you’ve can’t get both and still get the lowest price.

Spas have a lot of overhead, employees, products, leases, continuing education, etc. If their prices are “too good to be true” then they are cutting comers somewhere. Whether it’s in the quality of their services and products, or the customer service they provide, something has to suffer to give you those low, low prices.

Total value is all three: Quality, Service, and Price.

The three most common problems you will have when you pick a spa based on low prices are:

1. The first problem is that cheap spas don’t usually stand behind their work if there is a mistake. Sure, those spas might charge you less, but how will they treat you when you are not happy? To give the cheapest price they usually have low-wage, inexperienced employees, with a license to practice, but little or no real-world skills. They also cut comers by using cheaper products. Once you find a good spa, you must be loyal. If you flip-flop from spa to spa, a good spa won’t be too motivated to keep YOU as a client. They will cater to their loyal clients.

When you aren’t loyal to your spa, and show up every 6 months for them to “fix” your cheap chemical peel damage or bad waxing job, when you need a favor who are you going to turn to? When you’re in a hurry, you may not get enough time to communicate with your aesthetician or massage therapist to make sure you get exactly what you need. And, sometimes, one late client can push back schedules for the whole day. When you schedule a spa visit, don’t short yourself on time. Ask the spa how much time you should allow in your schedule and then add a half hour. You deserve it, it’s your time to treat yourself right – don’t rush it.

Before you get serviced at the spa, talk with your therapist. Make sure he or she knows what your likes and dislikes are, what your “goal” is and how you will achieve your desired look.

You can save time, money, and headaches from the very beginning by communication!

Mistake #5: Picking A Spa That Doesn’t Guarantee Their Services

Ail reputable spass guarantee their services automatically. This means if you aren’t happy they will attempt to “fix” whatever it is for free, and if you still aren’t happy they will return your money.

Unfortunately there are unethical spas that won’t do this. Instead they will argue with you for having “unrealistic expectations”.

An unethical spa may charge you for a re-visit, or refuse to give you your money back.

This is probably your best bet at finding a fantastic spa. Ask to see examples of their work. If they don’t have a book· for you to look through ask for references. A good spa will happily give you references.

Ask for the names of at least three people who have visited the therapist you’re interested in, and call them and ask them if they are happy with the spa.

Also, ask to read through any testimonials the spa has from clients. This is the easiest way you can find a spa for you!
